Richard Armitage B.Sc. (Econ. Hons.) FCILT
Richard Armitage works in sustainable travel and shared mobility, including travel plans, car clubs, bike hire, and cycle logistics; he is also involved in community and accessible passenger transport, and mainstream public transport.
Richard Armitage enjoys making it practical for more people to cycle, more often. He is a Founding Director of the European Cycle Logistics Federation, serves on the Advisory Board of the EU CycleLogistics Ahead project and is co-director of Cycle Waggle Ltd, the Manchester-based bike hire and cycle logistics start-up. He is chairman of the Cycling Forum of the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport UK.
Richard has developed a range of Workplace Travel Plans throughout England and Wales. Work within the NHS has included guidance on operating the Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (for Manchester Health Authority, circulated nationally), NICE guidance on accessibility planning and health, active travel services and PTS reviews.
For a decade (2004-14), Richard Armitage was the Travel Plan Co-ordinator at Grand Union Village, a 966 home residential and mixed use development on a brownfield site in west London, reporting to the developer, Taylor Wimpey plc.
Richard served on the panel of consultants for the DfT funded Transport Energy programme of Site Specific Advice for Travel Plans (99-06). He was in the consortium led by ITP that produced the DfT's Good Practice Guidance Making Car Sharing and Car Clubs Work (2004) and Making Personal Travel Planning Work (2007).
2013 PTRC Lifetime Achievement Award
At the 2013 Transport Practioners' Meeting in Birmingham, Richard was honoured to receive the 2013 PTRC Lifetime Achievement Award. This was for "work in developing local community transport schemes since the 1970s, as well as what the judging panel called his 'infectious enthusiasm' for good local transport planning and provision". The PTRC 2013 Transport Practitioners’ Meeting Awards recognised top transport planners across the UK for their work in proposing, planning and developing schemes that improve local transport provision, enhance the built environment, or contribute to local socio-economic well-being.
